1990's and Beyond:
- In 1992 the American Nursing Association (ANA) recognized nursing informatics as nursing specialty (Saba, 2001). An by 1995 the first NI credentialing exam was offered by the ANA (Saba, 2001).
- In 1998 the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) created the National Nursing Informatics Project which sought to develop Canadian competencies and strategies (Kaminski, 2011).
- Nursing Minimal Data Set was created as a way to ensure nursing data was included within the Canadian Institute of Health Information (CIHI) national database (Kaminski, 2011).
- In 1999 the International Council of Nurses (ICN) created a program to expand the scope of practice and advance nursing knowledge worldwide (Saba, 2001).
- During the 2000's the CNA continued to support informatics development through the publication of documents (CNA, 2001).
- In 2001 the Canadian Nursing Informatics Association (CNIA) was founded with the aspiration to be the voice for Nursing Informatics in Canada (CNIA, 2012).
- In 2003, CIHI published the Roadmap Initiative (CIHI, 2003).
- In 2006, the CNA launched NurseONE to develop a national strategy for nursing informatics (Kaminski, 2011).
